Considerato assente in epoca storica, lo scoiattolo comune (Sciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758) è oggi presente nel settore nord-orientale della Pianura Veneta. Alle prime segnalazioni, relative alla fascia di bassa pianura compresa tra il Piave e il Tagliamento, sono seguite nell’ultimo decennio conferme della sua diffusione verso occidente, con alcuni casi di avvenuta riproduzione. Probabilmente la specie si è espansa soprattutto da Nord-Est, seguendo la direttrice dei fiumi alpini.
 
Abstract.
Range expansion of the Red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, in the Venetian Plain (Italy) in the last decade (1998-2007) (Rodentia: Sciuridae). Within Italy, the Red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, is widespread all over the Alps and the Apennines. Considered historically absent from the Po Plain, the species is now marginally present in close proximity of hilly areas connected with the Pre-Alps. Occasional sightings of specimens in plain areas, between the Piave and Tagliamento rivers, were reported since 1998. This study lists 105 records (54 unpublished), testifying the recent presence of the Red squirrel within the administrative boundaries of 41 municipalities in the north-eastern Venetian Plain. The main routes of this rapid expansion may be represented by tree-lined alpine river courses and roads. Evidence of successful reproduction is reported as well.
